Angel-Mobbs to take up content role at B105

Ellie Angel-Mobbs (photo credit: Twitter)Ellie Angel-Mobbs is the new assistant content director for B105 in Brisbane.

She revealed in a Facebook post that she was ready to leave 2Day FM in Sydney at the end of the month and make the trek north with her husband, Jamie Angel.

Angel himself is already slated to take over the creative director role with Triple M Brisbane and anchor The Big Breakfast alongside Marto and Margaux; his predecessor-to-be, Dave Ferrier, will run a new nights show on Triple M regional.

B105’s current ACD, Abi Benaud, is slated to go on maternity leave in September 2021.

However, despite the big move, Angel-Mobbs will still continue co-hosting Hit 104.7 weekend breakfast with Jason Roses.

Nicole Archer’s move from bookshop manager to Lizzies nominee

Before Nicole Archer was in tech journalism, she was completing her Masters in museum and heritage studies alongside managing a bookshop.
It was an unconventional path, but she is now a nominee for the Samsung Australia IT Journalism Awards, an accolade she is very proud of.

Beckhouse joins 2CA

Chris “Becko” Beckhouse is back in action as the new program director and announcer of 2CA, effective 30 August, reported Radiotoday.

Radio Canberra group program director Peter Davidson made the announcement, stating the move is also a return to roots.

“Originally a Canberra lad, a much younger Becko started with 2CA/2CC as a panel op, so this is a homecoming in many ways. He has family based here and is a huge Canberra Raiders fan,” he stated.

Beckhouse recently left the mornings announcer role at Triple M Sydney. 

Van Boom combats impostor syndrome with Lizzies nominations

While still in year one of his career, as he calls it, Daniel Van Boom has netted himself three nominations for this year’s Samsung Australia IT Journalism Awards.

The CNET news editor says the Lizzies help him look back on the work he’s done across the year, often at stories which have been left behind by the “hamster wheel” of journalism.

“Everybody likes to be acknowledged, even if they have huge impostor syndrome about it. Journalism can kind of feel like a hamster wheel sometimes. You put a lot of effort into a story, you get excited, it gets published, you're thrilled for a few hours and then it starts again. 

“So things like The Lizzies are pleasantly effective at forcing you to look back at what you've done - which is nice. To have people say they like what you produced is even nicer.” 

Van Boom added that a win would probably see him deliver a nervous speech, it would also be a great moment for his career so far.

Executive changes at The Walkley Foundation

The Walkley Foundation is making some leadership changes as CEO Louisa Graham prepares to step down.

Graham has been with the Foundation for a decade, serving as both general manager and CEO across her time there. Recruitment efforts for a successor are already underway.

“I am immensely proud of what I have achieved at the Foundation and I depart having significantly grown the Walkleys’ equity and stakeholder base. It is encouraging to see so many of Australia’s leading companies, universities, state governments, industry bodies and now philanthropic organisations demonstrate their support for quality journalism through the Walkley Foundation,” said Graham of her exit.

O’Sullivan to lead SCA Sydney agency sales

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) has appointed Maryanne O’Sullivan as the new manager of its agency sales team in Sydney, effective 2 August.

Under SCA Sydney sales director Amanda Unwin, she will be in charge of developing the digital audio growth strategy with SCA Sydney’s agency partners, and plan out packages for potential advertisers.

O’Sullivan was previously the group sales manager and has been with the network for over four years.

“I am passionate about our business, our people and driving stronger partnerships with our agencies and clients alike. For the Marine Stewardship Council, the agency will develop integrated communications campaigns to promote the organisation. The Council is working to end overfishing and help canneries achieve sustainable fishing practices through a certification program.

History Will Be Kind is also assigned to run social media campaigns and develop new creative content for Elato Ice Cream. Founded by Roz Kaldor-Aroni, Elato offers gelato ice cream made from more egg yolks and less sugar than certain ice cream labels. The company is also dedicating part of its earnings to programs against food waste and hunger.

Daily Telegraph ends Jones column

The Daily Telegraph is no longer running Alan Jones’ weekly columns.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Daily Telegraph editor Ben English made the call in light of concerns that Jones’ content was not connecting with readers.  

The move followed a long period of time where Jones received much heat for his commentaries on the COVID-19 pandemic, from the scale of the government’s response to the danger of the DELTA strain. He also earned much ire as well from his former co-host on 2GB mornings, Ray Hadley, over sharing information on DELTA’s infection capability that Media Watch has since debunked.

Jones himself disputed the rationale for the newspaper closing his column space.   

“The same column that I write for the Tele goes up on my Facebook page. The public can check it for themselves. Thirty-five years at top of the radio and I don’t resonate with the public? Honestly,” he said.
